loose ends

Congratulations, The Upstate Life, for winning the 1st Annual Blogger Bracket Battle. In honor of the victory, here is a picture of your beloved Testudo (a sacrifice for this Blue Devil, to be sure).

In other news, Pop Culture Junkies (where I recap American Idol, America's Next Top Model, Heroes, Ugly Betty and Veronica Mars) is now Recapist. Go check it out! Conveniently, you can now get all my posts on one page.

revisiting star magazine's normal or not feature

I posted about this awhile back to little (or no, if we're being technical) response. One would think I might have learned a lesson from that, and in fact, I did...it's just not the lesson you likely hoped for. You see, I learned that the reason other people were not as passionate about the logic behind a leading gossip magazine's weekly judgement of celebrities as I had hoped they would be was because they weren't involved. They weren't interacting with the issue at hand. I didn't provide them with the visual aids and games necessary to engage them in this (soon-to-be-recognized-as) thrilling topic.

Also, their commitment to journalistic integrity was much weaker than my own.

As a result, I present to you a quiz based on Star's "Are they NORMAL or NOT?" column. Click on the names listed to see Star's exemplary picture of said celebrity (apologies for the sad scanning job, you may have to use the zoom). Decide whether that person appears normal or not based on your definitions of those words and understanding of the rules of relativity that likely govern Star's feature. After you have come to your conclusions, move on to the next page for answers. Lastly, report what your score was in the comments section.

It is your democratic duty. And, it should kill about ten minutes of work.

NORMAL? or NOT?

1. Uma Thurman

2. Jude Law

3. Charlize Theron

4. David Boreanaz

5. Mischa Barton

heroic comedy

Seeing as they're now introducing Heroes who can...wait for it...IM with their mind, this new video from Employee of the Month might just cross the line from parody to prophecy.

Like I said before, we're new to this, so thoughts are appreciated.

a little valentine's day love from employee of the month

Based on this post from a while back, Employee of the Month put together the following video, our first venture into the oversaturated world of internet comedy. It seems timely, given the day:

Let me know what you think!

who edits star magazine's normal or not feature?*

I can't seem to make rhyme or reason out of it. This week: Eva Longoria eating a hotdog = not! Last week: Eva Longoria shopping with her personal stylist = normal! All right, so not what I'd expect, but perhaps we're supposed to be judging if they're normal for a star? In which case, yeah, eating is out of the question, having a professional shopping buddy is par for the course. And yet they say that Jennifer Garner juggling her baby and groceries and a cell phone = normal! Huh. What's that about?

*yes, I realize this is Star we're talking about, and I a) shouldn't be reading it and b) shouldn't be worrying about it if I am. Ah well. Such is my life.

happy halloween!

The absolute best part of today? Dogs in costumes.

I look forward to seeing further canine costume shenanigans in West Hollywood tonight. Speaking of, does anyone have any sneaky parking tips they'd care to share?

on airport security

R2688552471So, were it not already clear, I recently took an international trip. While most of it was filled with fun, I did have a moment to ponder and eventually conclude that British security is exponentially better than ours. Both better organized, and more thorough. In Heathrow, there were people instructing departing passengers at every step of the way, so we weren't subjected to the "jerk at the front of the line who forgot to hold onto his boarding pass/take off his shoes/empty his pockets" effect that one gets at LAX. Everyone was frisked, without exception. At the gate, carry-ons which had been x-rayed already were opened and searched. I had to turn my camera and phone on to prove that they were indeed, a camera and a phone. It may have taken a little bit longer, but their organization offset any of my frustration, and I felt much safer. Why can't we do this in our airports? Is it a policy issue? An available work force issue? Training? What? Wouldn't we all give up a little extra time/money to be better protected? I'm curious. Help me out.

the quotable ari

Last night on Entourage, the fictional Ari Gold on agencies represented at a meeting:

"Who the fuck invited APA?"

Today on The Huffington Post, the real Ari Emanuel on Mel Gibson:

"There are times in history when standing up against bigotry and racism is more important than money."

It's a rare occasion when both a man and the character inspired by that man are simultaneously so dead on. Still, the edge goes to Gold for making me laugh so hard I almost fell off the couch.
