i'm using you
Or at least, I'd like to, with your permission. Don't worry, it's not for your good looks or your Hollywood connections or anything. It's just a simple question that I'd love your answer to:
What gets you interested in a TV show?
Answers obviously could range anywhere from on-air promotions, to web stuff, to word of mouth, to euphoric visions that came to you in a dream. Any and all are welcome. Oh, and while you're answering, maybe let me know what show you think does it right. I know that's two questions. I'm a horrible sneak.

I'm afraid I can be a tad bit shallow at times-- at least initially. If a show doesn't already have an established hook for me (ala Project Runway), then often it's the promise of some nice eye candy that will get me initially hooked. I had little need for Rockstar before I happened upon Storm Large (and we know where that obsession led). But as the weeks passed, my interest in her and the show have gone beyond the merely visual.
For example, a while back MTV had a show called That 70's House. Seemed stupid, but there was this oddly appealing lil redhead (a weakness of mine), so I kept tuning in. Turned out to be a semi-interesting case study in today's teens complete ignorance of the past (not even far past).
But eye candy is like a fishing lure-- the candy has to be pretty good to keep me invested in a show that has no merit.
But that's mainly with reality TV. Regular scripted stuff comes down to one word: writing. If a show is well written I will watch it. The current winner is Lost, and it has only partially helped me forget Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It must be the English Major dork in me, but I respond to complexity, charicterization, and thrilling dialogue.
That help? And if I had Hollywood connections, I'd help ya.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Though what happens when you're working on...reality claymation? It's different eye candy all together (and certainly not the kind that inspires the reaction we may see for, say, Storm Large).
How do you feel about myspace promotion?

Oh, and new rule, you can't post comments that are longer and better written than my original posts. ;-)
