Forgotten Gems: "Riptide"
Picture if you will, a magic time in American television: the nineteen eighties. A time when the inclusion of a helicopter meant you had a hit show, like "Magnum, P.I." or "Airwolf." But what happens when you take a helicopter, a houseboat, two Vietnam vets, a nerd, and a robot? You get "Riptide," the greatest Vietnam vets-with-a-nerd-and-a-robot-who-are-detectives television show ever made. I don't remember much, except there was a robot, a nerd, and the guys got their noses broken a lot. And they solved crimes.
Sadly, "Riptide" was canceled after a scant 58 episodes, just a season short of living on in syndicated immortality. Who knows how our nation would have been shaped if we had a daily dose of the 'tide? Instead, we had to watch that "Macgyver" bullshit. Ooh! Macgyver has a pen knife! I'm impressed! The boys of Riptide had a ROBOT. And a nerd.
I haven't seen an episode of "Riptide" in almost twenty years. I'm sure it's out there on cable somewhere. But I look at "Riptide" like I look at an old love. We had our time together, and can never recreate the magic. Plus, there's a restraining order involved.
